Love this song. It must be probably the best song never to have been released in India. Brings out all the core issues in India today and has been sung with such emotion. The rendition of that final ‘Bhārata ko bachā le vidhāta’ kills me every time I hear it. The lyrics (original anthem marked in blue):

Jana gaṇa mana tann hai iss raṇ mein,
Zakhmi Bhārata ka bhāgya vidhātā

Punjāba Sind Gujarāṭa Marāṭhā
Ik doosre se lad ke mar rahe hain

Is desh ne humko ek kiya
Aur hum desh ke tukde kar rahe
Drāviḍa Utkala Banga
Khoon baha kar ek rang ka,
Kar diya humne tiranga
Sarhadon pe jung aur galiyon mein danga (tiranga?)

Vindhya Himāchala Yamunā Gangā
Mein tezaab ubal raha hai

Mar gaya sab ka zameer
Jaane kab zinda ho aage
Fir bhi Tava śubha nāme jāge
Tava śubha āśiṣa māge

Aag pe chal kar cheekh (jeet?) raha hai
Fir bhi koi nahin bachata
Gāhe tava jaya gāthā

Des ka aisa haal hai lekin
Aapas mein lad rahe neta
Jana gaṇa mangala dāyaka jaya he
Bhārata ko bachā le vidhāta

Jaya he (not clear at all)
Jana gaṇa mana raṇ hai

From the movie, Rann. However, if you don’t already know, you won’t find this anywhere as it was banned before release for being ‘disrespectful’ to the national anthem. Another spoke into the death of tolerance in India. Mail me if you want the mp3 or listen to the song in trailer below:

If you’re interested in the original national anthem of India, it’s here: (from Wikipedia, where a translation is also available)

Jana gaṇa mana adhināyaka jaya he
Bhārata bhāgya vidhātā
Punjāba Sind Gujarāṭa Marāṭhā
Drāviḍa Utkala Banga
Vindhya Himāchala Yamunā Gangā
Ucchala jaladhi taranga
Tava śubha nāme jāge
Tava śubha āśiṣa māge
Gāhe tava jaya gāthā
Jana gaṇa mangala dāyaka jaya he
Bhārata bhāgya vidhāta
Jaya he jaya he jaya he
Jaya jaya jaya jaya he!
