I have a theory that Britain’s regrettable past as Empire was entirely down to central heating not being invented.

Above came from an English friend some time back as I was cribbing about the mild chill of early autumn. Now, suffering through this first real cold spell of English winter, I’m tending to agree with him. Sorry homeland, but it is way too bloody cold here. With heating on, socks on, a bed sheet on and a warm laptop on my lap, I’m still shivering.

For emphasis, he did add:
