Ride 6, 2011 - Hampstead Heath

After the ride to West Hyde, I wasn’t too interested in doing the (crowded) regular circuit again. There was also the matter of visiting the hospital to get my hand checked up and re-bandaged. So, I headed off to Hampstead Heath.

Climbed 2/3rd up the Fitzjohn’s Av towards Hampstead before descending to Royal Free Hospital for the check up. I had planned the ride around Hampstead Heath to be a clockwise one but given the Westerly winds and the layout of climbs, changed it into an anti-clockwise one. Unfortunately, that change also meant that what was to be 2 or 3 moderate climbs, turned into a straight 2km climb with average incline of over 3%. As if that wasn’t enough, I added to my misery by smoking a cigarette before starting from the hospital – that sutta and climb smoked my heart out :(

After that one big climb, the rest of ride was easy even though there were a other, smaller climbs into the wind later. After completing one round of the heath, went up the Parliament Hill for a view of the city – LDN. It’s a beautiful sight on all sides – the high-rises of city & canary wharf, the Kenwood house and Highgate. Even found a mother-son duo trying to fly a kite up there as well :)

After the short sight-seeing detour, headed back uphill to Fitzjohn’s Av and then down to O2 Centre at Finchley road for some shopping and a delicious lunch at Nando’s before heading back home via West End lane and Abbey Road.

All in all, a lovely day and a short, hard ride. The highlight from stats for me – I’d climbed as much as on the ride to West Hyde while riding under a third of the distance. Plan to do more of these Heath laps later to train for climbing.

Cheers!
